Here's what you need to be an au pair in Denmark:

Citizens of EU and EEA countries

  • You are between 18 and 29 years old
  • You are not married and have no minor children of your own.
  • Your own family cannot accompany you to Denmark.
  • You have adequate knowledge of Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, English or German so that you can communicate successfully.

Citizens of other countries

  • You are between 18 and 29 years old
  • You are not married and have no minor children of your own.
  • Your own family cannot accompany you to Denmark.

  • You have not previously had a residence permit for Denmark.

Requirements for host families


Here's what you need to be a host family in Denmark:

  • At least one of the host family parents must be a Danish citizen or have lived for a long time in Denmark.
  • You have one or more minor children living permanently in your household.
  • You do not receive any public assistance funds.
  • You may not employ more than one au pair at a time.
  • SYou must pay DKK 17,000 DKK to the Danish Agency for Labour Market and Recruitment to finance part of the state's expenses for Danish courses for au pairs.
  • You must take out 3 different kinds of insurance: one against worked-related injuries, another covering leisure time accidents and a third one covering serious illness or other injuries.
